Tajikistan is located in an active seismic zone. Avalanches and landslides frequently block roads in the spring. Evacuation from remote, mountainous regions of Tajikistan can be very difficult problem, especially since tourists are usually in remote areas with slow transport, poor communication, and a real lack of health facilities.
Helicopter fly evacuation is also available but the arrangements can be difficult to make in local civil air company or military and are expensive (the cost of the MI-8 helicopter for one hour is around 5, 500 USD in 2013).
Comprehensive travel and medical insurance, including evacuation by air ambulance, is essential.
